All 24 competing teams participated in the ESL Pro League Season 23: Online Stage, battling through two Swiss Stages. The standout upset of Stage 1 was the early elimination of PARIVISION, currently ranked #5 in the HLTV world rankings. Despite a commanding start with two victories, PARIVISION’s run fell apart after three consecutive losses, resulting in an unexpected early exit from the tournament.

The competition intensified during Stage 2, as the field’s power level rose as top-tier organizations skipped Stage 1 to debut directly in the second phase. Team Spirit and MOUZ emerged as the dominant forces, both securing flawless 3-0 records in their opening matches to be the first to clinch playoff berths. On the other hand, FURIA Esports delivered a massive disappointment to their fanbase; despite holding the #2 spot in the world rankings, the Brazilian squad failed to break into the final eight. Notably, nearly all of FURIA’s losses came at the hands of teams that were ultimately eliminated alongside them. 

In a departure from previous seasons, the organizers of ESL Pro League Season 23 have revamped the format: the final stage will shift from the traditional ESL studio setting to a full-scale arena.

The defining shift for ESL Pro League Season 23 was the move to a hybrid competitive structure. Unlike the previous season, which was held entirely in a closed studio setting, this iteration transitioned the opening stages to an online format to prioritize a large-scale stadium finale. 

A key point of contention and excitement will be the return of the playoffs to a live audience at the Annexet Arena, marking a stark contrast to the studio-only atmosphere of Season 22. Furthermore, the revamped tournament structure is set to introduce a dedicated Best-of-3 third-place decider, which will serve as a high-stakes curtain-raiser immediately preceding the Grand Final.

ESL Pro League Season 23: Online Stage generated just over 18 million Hours Watched (HW), maintaining a similar pace to the previous season. However, average viewership dropped by 15.3% and peak viewership plunged by 26.4%. Notably, this decline was consistent across all major broadcast languages.

Several factors contributed to this downturn in viewership. First, the absence of Team Vitality and Team Falcons — last season’s grand finalists — was deeply felt. As two of the most popular organizations in professional Counter-Strike, their withdrawal directly impacted the tournament’s reach. 

Secondly, the early elimination of top-tier favorites played a major role. Of the HLTV top 5, only MOUZ managed to secure a spot in the playoffs; however, their fan base remains significantly smaller compared to their elite rivals. Performance struggles from heavyweights like Team Liquid, FaZe Clan, and G2 Esports further alienated viewers.

Finally, the underwhelming performance of the Brazilian contingent was a critical factor; out of four Brazilian squads, only Legacy — the least popular among them — advanced to the playoffs. This could later become a problem for the tournament’s overall viewership numbers, as Brazilian audiences are among the most active and loyal fans in Counter-Strike. Portuguese-language broadcasts consistently attract large crowds, but once Brazilian teams are eliminated from the competition, their fans rarely continue watching the remaining matches.

ESL Pro League Season 23: Online Stage top matches

The clash between Astralis and FURIA Esports emerged as the tournament’s most-watched fixture, peaking at over 271,000 viewers. The high viewership was driven by the massive stakes involved, as both teams fought for a final playoff berth; ultimately, the Brazilian squad suffered an upset defeat at the hands of the Danes. A similar surge in interest was seen during the Natus Vincere vs. 3DMAX matchup, which saw NAVI secure their spot in the next stage.

The matchup between G2 Esports and FUT Esports also proved to be a major talking point. While G2 may currently be struggling to find their peak form, the victory was a historic milestone for FUT Esports; the win marked the young squad’s first-ever qualification for the playoffs at a Tier-S event.

ESL Pro League Season 23: Main stage — all you need to know

The ESL Pro League Season 23 playoffs are set to take place from March 13–15 at Stockholm’s Annexet Arena. The venue is a familiar landmark for the esports community; Dota 2 fans will remember it as the home of The Stockholm Major 2019, and it has also played host to numerous DreamHack events and LEC (League of Legends) matchups over the years. While the Annexet can accommodate up to 4,000 attendees for esports gatherings, the final capacity will shift based on the specific stage configuration and seating arrangements.
